Burke County Jail Contact

Burke County Jail is on the county government campus in Morganton, near the Sheriff's Office main address. The jail phone line is the best public contact for current custody confirmation, visitor questions, and basic routing when the online roster does not answer the question. The Sheriff's Office main phone and email are separate from the jail phone, so custody questions should start with the jail unless the issue is a broader sheriff records matter.

Burke County Jail Video Visits

Burke County Jail does not have in-person social visitation. The inmate handbook states that all visitation is conducted through PayTel video. On-site video visitation is still a video visit, not a face-to-face visit. It is free, limited to 15 minutes, limited to one visit per week for each registered online account, and must be scheduled online at least 24 hours before the visit date and up to 30 days ahead.

Remote video visits are also through PayTel. The handbook lists remote visits at $0.50 per minute, charged to the visitor account, with no daily limit per inmate within system hours. Visitors must create an account, upload a photo and valid government-issued ID, and receive jail approval before using the system. Children under 18 cannot create their own accounts, but children of incarcerated people may visit on a parent or grandparent account under the rules.

Available public windows depend on the inmate's recreation schedule and can include 7:15-8:45 a.m., 9:15-10:45 a.m., 1:15-2:45 p.m., or 8:15-8:45 p.m. The inmate must confirm an on-site visit after the visitor schedules it. Visits are recorded and may be monitored by the Sheriff's Office. PayTel technical support is separate from jail staff.

Burke County Jail Mail

General mail for Burke County Jail is not delivered as ordinary physical mail at the jail. The handbook uses a Secure Mail processing center in Greensboro. Mail and photos sent there are scanned for tablet access, and physical mail is destroyed after scanning. The envelope must include the facility name, inmate name, inmate ID number, and Facility ID Number 5020, or the mail will not be scanned.

Mail limits are strict. The handbook lists a limit of 10 pages or less per envelope and page size no larger than 8.5 by 11 inches. It allows written or typed pages, drawings, greeting cards, and photos, but not Polaroids. It prohibits cash, checks, money orders, glitter, glue, tape, three-dimensional items, electronic elements, sexual content, gang content, drug or alcohol content, violent content, contraband, books, magazines, packages, publications, and original essential documents.

Burke County Jail Money

Burke County Jail money and commissary rules come from the inmate handbook. All money transactions must be made through JailATM online or the lobby ATM. Commissary purchases are capped at $120 for food, hygiene items, and writing materials. Orders must be entered by phone or tablet by 11:58 p.m. Sunday night and are generally distributed Tuesdays, subject to holidays and schedule conflicts.

Family and friends may purchase certain commissary items through JailCanteen. The handbook warns that delivery can take up to three weeks. Inmates without funds receive an indigent kit once weekly on commissary distribution day. Canteen items left after release must be collected by the inmate or an authorized collection agent within seven days.

Burke County Jail Intake

A public step-by-step Burke County booking page was not located, but the inmate handbook gives local intake facts. Each admission includes a medical screening, and staff may conduct another screening when they are concerned about an inmate's wellness. Burke County Jail Programs

Burke County Jail tablets are used for mail access, educational and entertainment material, religious information, grievances and requests, and law library access. General population inmates receive tablets daily after the morning meal and keep them until lockdown at 10 p.m. Inmates on disciplinary segregation or suicide watch do not receive tablets. Tablet damage or misuse can lead to loss of access and charges for the current replacement cost.

The grievance system starts with speaking to an officer. If that does not resolve the issue, the inmate can submit a grievance or request through a tablet or PayTel kiosk, with a hard-copy route for inmates who cannot operate the device. Administrative supervisors review submissions, responses are due within 15 days, and the inmate may appeal for a reply within 24 hours. The handbook limits inmates to one grievance or request each day.
