Search Burke County Inmate Records

Burke County inmate records begin with the local jail roster for people held after a county arrest, but the correct search path depends on custody status. Current local detainees may appear in the county's public roster, while sentenced state prisoners, federal inmates, immigration detainees, and victim-notification records use separate systems. A Burke County jail roster search should therefore start with the local custody portal, then move to direct jail contact, public-records routing, state and federal locators, and notification tools when the person is not listed.

Official Burke County Jail Inmate Search

The official online route for current Burke County Jail inmate records is the P2C Jail Inmates portal. The Burke County Sheriff's Office links this tool as "Who's in jail in Burke County," and the portal is branded for Morganton Department of Public Safety and Burke County Sheriff's Office. It is the first place to check for people booked into local custody by the Burke County Sheriff's Office, Morganton Department of Public Safety, or another local agency whose arrestee is accepted into the county jail.

The roster is not a complete North Carolina custody index. Burke County Jail handles newly arrested adults, pretrial defendants, local sentenced misdemeanants, and local holds. A person sentenced to state prison moves into the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction system. Federal custody and immigration custody are separate again. The research did not locate an official refresh rate, release-retention window, or uptime schedule for the P2C roster, so time-sensitive custody questions should be confirmed with Burke County Jail at 828-764-9590.

The official Burke County jail page is available at burkenc.org/2562/Jail, and the Sheriff's Office page is at burkenc.org/2470/Sheriffs-Office. Sheriff Robert "Banks" Hinceman is named on the sheriff page, and the jail contact page lists the detention address and phone number.

The roster interface itself is shown in the official P2C Jail Inmates portal capture below.

Use that screen for the current public search, then call the jail when spelling, transfer status, release timing, or a missing new booking makes the online result uncertain.

Use Burke County Inmate Roster

Start with the official P2C roster rather than a commercial directory. The public search criteria do not show any paid-login requirement for the basic inmate lookup. Because the portal is a browser application, use the page controls rather than trying to query the underlying app directly.

  1. Open the P2C Jail Inmates portal.
  2. Enter one or more identifying details, such as last name, first name, middle name, age, charge, arrest date, race, sex, or booking agency.
  3. Use Booking Agency when it matters whether the booking came through BCSD, listed as Burke County Sheriff's Department, or MDPS, listed as Morganton Department Public Safety.
  4. Review the result card or profile for name, arrest date, booking agency, charge, bond, release, court date, and image fields that are currently enabled.
  5. If no result appears, try spelling variations and fewer filters, then call Burke County Jail at 828-764-9590 for urgent confirmation.

Newly booked people may not appear immediately. A person may also disappear from the local roster after release, transfer, state-prison admission, federal transfer, or another agency hold. The roster is strongest for current local custody, not for older criminal-history research.

The P2C inmate search criteria endpoint identifies the official filter set below. The endpoint did not mark any field as required, so the safest approach is to start broad, then narrow by date, charge, demographic filters, or booking agency.

Burke County Inmate Profile Fields

The P2C inmate module supports a wider field set than every public result will necessarily display. Local settings can hide or show fields such as date of birth, bond amounts, release details, traits, arrest notes, home address, and holding facility. Treat a blank field as a display or data limitation, not proof that the fact does not exist.

County State Federal ICE Searches

Burke County has two detention facilities that can confuse searches. Burke County Jail is the local facility for pretrial and short-sentence custody. Foothills Correctional Institution is a separate NCDAC state prison in Morganton for sentenced state prisoners. A person in Foothills should not be searched as a county jail inmate unless they were separately booked into the local jail.

Booking and Intake Records in Burke County

Burke County does not publish a separate public page that walks through every booking step. The available sources show the usual path: arrest or warrant service by a local agency, transport to custody or magistrate processing, jail intake, identity and warrant checks, property inventory, medical screening, photographing and fingerprinting when authorized by N.C. Gen. Stat. § 15A-502, classification, housing, and phone or tablet setup.

The Burke County Jail handbook adds local details. A medical screening occurs during each admission and whenever staff are concerned about an inmate's wellness. Digital medical request forms are available through tablets or PayTel kiosks for non-emergency care. No inmate is denied care because of inability to pay, and mental-health and emergency services are not charged. The handbook cites N.C.G.S. § 153A-225(a) and lists $20 for a non-emergency medical-care incident and $10 for a 30-day supply or less of prescription medication.

Property rules are also part of the intake record. Family and visitors may not physically deliver clothing or personal items. Approved clothing and personal items must come through commissary or approved online vendor shipments. Excess property or contraband is stored in the inmate property bin, and property left 30 days after release is treated as abandoned under jail policy.

PayTel Video Visitation Schedule and Rules

Burke County Jail does not conduct in-person social visitation. The handbook states that all visitation is through PayTel video. On-site video is scheduled online, is free, lasts 15 minutes, and is limited to one visit per week for each registered account. Remote video visits cost $0.50 per minute and have no daily limit within system hours.

Mail, Phones, Tablets, and Contact After Booking

General mail and photos do not go directly to the jail. Use: Burke County Jail, Inmate Name, Inmate ID Number, Facility ID Number 5020, PO Box 18247, Greensboro, NC 27419. The facility name, inmate name, inmate ID number, and Facility ID 5020 must be included or mail will not be scanned. Legal mail goes to Burke County Jail, inmate name and ID, 130 Government Drive, Morganton, NC 28655, and should be marked as legal or attorney-client mail.

General mail is scanned and then accessed digitally. The handbook allows written or typed pages, photos, drawings, and greeting cards, but not cash, checks, money orders, glitter, glue, tape, electronic or 3D elements, contraband, prohibited content, magazines, books, packages, publications, or original essential documents. Released inmates may request digital copies of scanned mail by emailing bill.viggers@burkenc.org with the jail name, inmate name, inmate ID number, and email address.

Tablets are used for mail access, religious material, grievances, requests, law library, education, and entertainment. General-population inmates have access to PayTel kiosks during day-room recreation. Inmates on disciplinary segregation or suicide watch do not receive tablets.

Commissary, Money, and Before-You-Send Checks

Burke County Jail does not accept U.S. postal money orders, government checks, personal checks, or cash through the mail for inmate accounts. Money transactions must be made online through JAILATM.COM or through the Burke County Jail lobby ATM. Inmates may purchase no more than $120 in food, hygiene items, and writing materials. Commissary orders must be entered by phone or tablet by 11:58 p.m. Sunday and are generally distributed on Tuesday, subject to conflicts or holidays.

Family and friends may purchase certain commissary items at jailcanteen.com, with delivery that can take up to three weeks. Inmates without funds receive an indigent kit once weekly on commissary distribution day. Canteen items for released inmates must be collected by the inmate or an authorized collection agent within seven days of release.

Confirm first: Check the P2C roster and call Burke County Jail before sending money, scheduling video, or mailing items for someone who may have been released or transferred.
